Why I am Making Strides

Hearing the words: “You have cancer” is something that I would never wish on anyone. Having first hand been told those terrifying words, you are left speechless and in a haze, not knowing what to do first, who to call, what steps you must take to take back your life. Witnessing the battle that so many loved ones before me have fought and continue to fight is always that driving force which only further ignites my fire to beat cancer and to see to it that not one more person has to hear those dreaded words.

On May 30, 2014 I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, breast cancer. As life altering as cancer can be (and most often viewed in the negative), it is something that also shows you just how beautiful life can be at the same time. It brings out in people what you never thought possible; the family support you’ve always been told you had is shown tenfold and you find out that those friends you call family would 110% go to the ends of the earth for you, day or night. It is in these last four months that my world has been rocked by cancer, but solidified at the same time by my family, friends, and kind-hearted strangers who understand the battle. That is who I am walking for. I could easily choose to do this walk for myself, but I think the support systems and caregivers work just as hard to defeat cancer and see to it that we fight never looking back.

I also walk for my family members, friends and all those who have fought before me and are currently fighting this battle with me. It is one hardship that we did not choose, but one that ties us together for life. I am counting down the days until I can say I am cancer free; and that will be a beautiful day. Until that point, I will continue to stay focused, believe in miracles and a cure, and always fight like a girl.

Why I Support the American Cancer Society

Every day, the American Cancer Society helps people take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or find it early when it is easiest to treat. Today 1 of every 2 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer reaches out to them for help and support. They provide free information and services when and where women need it throughout their journey to get well. They are investing in groundbreaking research to find, prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer, and are working to ensure access to mammograms for women who need them.

I have signed up to walk and fundraise with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. I hope you will consider joining my team and/or making a donation in support of my efforts.

Together, we can make strides to end breast cancer!
